The talk will present how site-directed nitroxide spin labels, examined by EPR spectroscopy, report on discrete features of protein structure and dynamics. Using studies on apolipoproteins, the utility of this approach to describe conformational switching and lipid-protein interactions is demonstrated.  The ability of site-directed spin labeling to report on protein folding and algometric assembly is illustrated by work on the intermediate filament protein vimentin.
