Abstract

Our research group designs and synthesizes arenemonoimides and arenebisdicarboxiimides that exhibit dichroic properties (direction-dependent absorption of light) and fluorescence emission at long wavelengths.  In addition, these compounds exhibit liquid-crystalline properties and anisotropic (direction-dependent) solid-state properties.  Template-guided organization of these compounds led to the formation of anisotropic fluorescent materials in micropatterns.  Anisotropic films and micropatterned anisotropic materials have potential applications in the microelectronic fields, as holographic films, as viewing angle-dependent optical materials, and in stereoscopic displays.  The fabrication of nano-sized anisotropic materials and the studies of the conducting properties of the materials are underway.
