Welcome to CBST
The National Science Foundation science and technology center devoted to the study of light and radiant energy in biology and medicine
The Center will foster biophotonic science and engineering in service to society, create new knowledge, and train a new class of scientists, educators, and professionals that will benefit all mankind in the 21st century.
Dennis Matthews, Ph.D.
Our Mission
Our Mission is to improve the quality of life by dramatically expanding the use of photons in and the development of technology for the life sciences, bioengineering and health care. This will be accomplished through research, education, and knowledge transfer that is integrative, interdisciplinary, multi-institutional and highly diverse.
Our Goal
Our goal is to be the preeminent enterprise that harvests the tremendous potential of biophotonics to improve the quality of life.
Who is CBST?
The center brings together scientists, industry, educators and the community to research and develop applications for biophotonics -- the science of using light to understand the inner workings of cells and tissues in living organisms.
Roughly 100 researchers -- including physical scientists, life scientists, physicians and engineers from UC Davis, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco, Alabama A&M University, Stanford University, University of Texas at San Antonio, Hampton University, and Fisk University -- are collaborating in this exciting area of research. Applications of biophotonics range from using light to image or selectively treat tumors, to sequencing DNA and identifying single biomolecules within cells.
